Packing Tips and Tricks

Monday, October 7, 2019

Packing for any trip is difficult. How much do I need to bring? What if it rains? What if it gets really hot or cold? Believe me, I used to overpack like crazy, but I have recently come up with a few handy tips to make packing a bit easier.

1.    Write out a packing list: This is an absolute must! Write out what you are planning to take, whether that be on paper or in your phone, and check off each item as you pack it. This ensures that you don’t forget any essential items and can help prevent overpacking.

2.    Plan your outfits in advance: I try to plan my outfits, rather than just throw a hundred different items into my bag. I find it useful to try on my outfits while I’m packing so I know exactly how I will style that particular outfit. I also try to plan what I will wear each day of the trip, with maybe one to two extra outfits just in case – you never know when you may need to mix it up!

3.    Pack basic items that can be styled multiple ways: A good pair of jeans, shorts or leggings can be styled so many ways! No one will even realize you’ve worn that item of clothing before if you style it differently.

4.    Purchase travel sized toiletries: If you plan on traveling frequently then travel sized toiletries are the way to go. Not only can they be placed in a carry on item, they also take up significantly less room in your luggage. This also goes for items such as straighteners and hairdryers.

5.    Use packing cubes or roll your clothes to maximize space: I am a fan of both of these methods. I find packing cubes to be particularly useful as you can place the outfits you have planned into separate cubes so you don’t forget what you were planning on wearing! In my experience I have found that by rolling my clothes I can fit much more into my case then by simply folding them. Below is a set of packing cubes on Amazon and the link to purchase it.

6.    Limit the number of shoes you pack: This is the one I struggle with the most. There is no need to bring 10 pairs of shoes on a trip, no matter how tempting it may be! I try to wear comfortable, practical shoes for travel on the plane, such as converse as I know I will wear them throughout my trip, and then aim to pack one pair of sandals during the summer or boots in the winter, sneakers for activities such as hiking or the gym, one pair of heels/boots I would wear out to dinner or a bar if the previous pair I have packed doesn’t work, and if it’s a beach trip a pair of flip flops.

7.    Always pack a change of clothes in your carry-on: Learn from my mistakes!! Always, always, always pack a change of clothes and PJS in your carry-on luggage. I have arrived in Wisconsin after traveling for almost 24 hours from Australia, only to find out my luggage didn’t make it onto the plane, meaning I had to wait a whole day until my clothes were delivered to me! Since then I have always kept a change of clothes with me just in case.

I hope these tips helped. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read this post!
